A Year of Firsts: Progress, Recognition, and Building Momentum

Steve Cabrera

This was our first full year at the Pyramid Lake Spiritual Healing Center, and thanks to your support, we’ve accomplished more than we imagined. Together, we’ve built a foundation for healing, launched programs that honour Paiute traditions, and created spaces for community connection.

Here’s what we’ve achieved together in 2024 and how your support is shaping our vision for 2025.

2024 Highlights: A Year to Remember

Sharing Dean’s Mission Through Film

Our first video, “Meet Dean,” introduced his work to a global audience, raising awareness about our mission and inspiring others to join in preserving Paiute culture and fostering healing.

First Steps Forward: Dean’s Journey

With the help of a custom prosthetic leg, Dean is walking again—an incredible milestone after years in a wheelchair. His determination reflects the resilience that inspires everything we do.

The Community Garden Takes Root

This year marked the start of our community garden project, led by Nellie Davis. The groundwork is being laid for a space that will bring people together, reconnect them with the land, and share the wisdom of Paiute traditions.

Building Inclusive Communities

This autumn Dean hosted a Two-Spirit Gathering that brought people together in a safe, welcoming space to heal and connect. These events highlight the power of inclusion and understanding, strengthening bonds within and beyond our community.

Dean Honored with the Lozen and Dahteste Warrior Award

One of the year’s most meaningful moments was Elder Dean Barlese receiving the Lozen and Dahteste Warrior Award. This recognition celebrates Dean’s dedication to creating safe, inclusive spaces for Two-Spirit individuals and his lifelong work of healing and cultural preservation.

Looking Ahead: 2025

As we reflect on a remarkable first year, we’re also excited about what’s ahead. With your continued support, 2025 will be a year of growth and deeper impact:

Dean’s Continued Health Journey

Supporting Dean’s health remains our top priority as he works toward qualifying for a kidney transplant.

Expanding the Community Garden and Walking Path

We’ll complete the walking path to support Dean’s recovery, grow the garden into a vibrant space for healing and learning, and welcome visitors of all abilities.

Bringing Communities Together

We’ll expand our Two-Spirit Gatherings and other events, creating even more opportunities for connection, healing, and cultural celebration.

Launching a Cultural Video Series

Building on the success of “Meet Dean,” our new video series will preserve Paiute traditions, engage local youth, and share Indigenous wisdom with the world.
