New Video: Paiute Wisdom & Stewardship Talk at Burners Without Borders, Burning Man 2024
Steve Cabrera
We’re excited to share a powerful talk from Paiute leaders Dean Barlese and Donna Cossette at Burners Without Borders during Burning Man 2024! Dean and Donna speak on their deep connection to their ancestral lands, sharing insights into environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and the challenges their people face today, especially at Pyramid Lake and Thacker Pass.
In this second of two talks at Burning Man 2024, they explore key topics such as:
- The importance of protecting sacred lands like Thacker Pass and Pyramid Lake
- Dean’s Community Garden vision in Nixon to grow healthy, non-GMO food for the Paiute people
- The challenges of repatriating Native remains and preparing them for proper burial
- Stories of Paiute cultural resilience, including their traditions of gender diversity and hospitality
- Reflections on their first Burning Man experience and the growing relationship with the community
This talk reminds us of our collective responsibility to safeguard the Earth and honor the wisdom of Indigenous cultures.
